Religious Education

Welcome to our Children and Youth Faith Development Program!

Our Faith Development classes are designed to enrich the spiritual lives of children, youth and families. We provide Faith Development classes on most Sundays and intergenerational services on the others.

If your child will be attending a class, your family must check-in at the Welcome Table located in the Palmer Room behind the sanctuary.  Your child will receive a name tag that is worn to ensure they go to the correct classroom.

Sunday Morning Schedule and Activities

For the beginning of the service, young people over the age of 3 are in the sanctuary with the rest of the congregation.  Children are invited forward for a “Story for all Ages” and then the congregation sings the young people out to their classes. Parents pick up their children 15 minutes after the end of the service (11:30am or 11:45am).

All classes start with a common worship circle.  We ring a chime followed by a short meditation, light a chalice, sing a chalice lighting song, and speak our worship circle words.  Finally, an offertory basket is passed around and the young people blow in good wishes and/or put in money; at the end of the year they vote on how to donate the money (learning about the democratic process).

In order to keep the sacred, child-centered nature of our classes, the only adults allowed into the rooms are the two volunteers teaching the class (unless prior arrangements are made with the DFD).

Program Philosophy

The Children & Youth Faith Development Program at Second Unitarian Church provides a loving, safe community of faith that fosters the spiritual, emotional, social and intellectual growth of each child. We challenge our children, youth and families to use our Unitarian Universalist principles to live engaged, compassionate and powerful lives.

Our program emphasizes respect for others and all living things, social justice, compassion, diversity, truth-seeking, and a world community of peace.

You can register for all classes by downloading the registration form. If you are new to the church or have any questions, please contact Alicia Obando, Director of Faith Development, at

Children must be picked up by a parent at the end of class.  Prompt pickup is important.  Infants and toddlers should be picked up right after service.  Preschoolers and older children are picked up 15 minutes after the end of the service.
