Spirituality Discussion Groups

Second Unitarian is a vibrant community living in a moment of growth and spiritual deepening. Spirituality Discussion Groups are designed to create spaces for a closer connection. Along with the beauty of our collective worship each Sunday, we need spaces to practice vulnerability and engage our curiosity together. Spirituality Discussion Groups are a space to lift our voices, learn with one another, and build authentic relationships.

We have two primary types of Spirituality Discussion Groups. The first is our all-church Soul Matters theme Spirituality Discussion Group. Individuals who choose, are assigned to a group. While no one is required to attend, all are encouraged to try to connect with their groups. Groups are intentionally created to be intergenerational while also giving attention to the needs of families with children. Sign up here.

The second type of Spirituality Discussion Group is focused on shared identity, experience, or interest. Currently, two Spirituality Discussion Groups are meeting monthly, Women of Wisdom, made up of women over the age of 60, and Young Adults between the ages of 18 and 35. The Diverse & Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministry (DRUUMM) is a group for black/indigenous/people of color to come together for spiritual community and collective action. Those who identify as white should participate in the DRUUMM Allies & Accomplices Group. Please contact Berlinda Browne for more info on DRUUMM, Pip Paris for DRUUMM Allies, get in touch with Eileen Meyer or Sally Harding for Women of Wisdom, and contact Ellen Rockett for more info about the Young Adults. If you have an interest in creating another group, contact Rev. Jason.

  • Facilitators will be expected to help hold space for conversation, set the tone of the conversation, encourage each member to participate, intervene if the group needs redirection, ensure the group creates and then practices their shared covenant, and coordinate the logistics for each meeting (where people are meeting, what date/time, will we share food). Facilitators will be provided opening readings they can choose to use and questions to help guide the conversation. The readings and questions will go along with the Soul Matters theme of the month.

  • Spirituality Discussion Groups are encouraged to meet each month. Meetings should plan to run for between one and two hours. Groups are welcome to meet face-to-face if they choose to via group consensus or meet virtually using Zoom.

  • If you are someone who enjoys engaging with others in deep conversation, if you like to bring people together for learning and relationship building, or if you are looking for a way to deepen your commitment to our church community, this might be a good role for you. You do not need to be an expert in group facilitation to take on this role. You need to be patient, compassionate, and willing to put time into coordination and communication.
