Letter from the Board 8/1/2025

Dear 2U Friends,

I’ve been a member of Second Unitarian since 2008. But it’s only in the past year—since joining the Board of Trustees—that I’ve come to fully appreciate just how many people’s time, talent, and persistence it takes to keep our church running.

I couldn’t begin to list everything that our staff, contractors, and volunteers do to make 2U function—from the highly visible (preaching, music-making) to the overlooked (stocking the bathrooms with toilet paper, changing the light bulbs). And all of it matters.

If you’re at a point where just showing up on Sundays is what you have to give, that’s enough. I’ve been there too. Your presence alone strengthens our community. And if you’re among those serving on committees and volunteering behind the scenes: thank you. Summer has a reputation for being the slow season at UU churches, but I can attest that lots of us have been deeply engaged in service and problem solving lately.

We Unitarian Universalists have adopted the phrase “placing love at the center.” When I hear “love,” I picture smiles, hugs, and kind words. But sometimes love looks like line-by-line budget approval. Sometimes it means sitting through a board meeting that drags on just a little too long. And this past month, love meant troubleshooting a perplexing A/V crisis. Special thanks to our Lead A/V and Production Specialist, Rylee Short, for leading that effort. May we never again endure that screeching sound!

Sometimes we enjoy the work we do for 2U. And sometimes it’s a real sacrifice. But all of it—every form of labor and care—flows from love for this community.

Bearing witness to that love, in action, fills me with deep gratitude.

—Greg Potts, 2U Board Chair
