Letter from the Board 10/1/2025
Dear 2U Friends,
The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “No one ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same person.”
And yet, even in the midst of change, the river is paradoxically steady. I see this at Second Unitarian. Change is constant—sometimes even accelerated. Since I became board chair in July, we’ve welcomed a new interim music director, Marianne Parker, and a sabbatical minister, Rev. Allison Farnum. The makeup of our board and many committees have shifted. Thanks to a generous gift, we paid off our mortgage.
And our building is transforming too. Our upgraded ramp and entrance are now open, dramatically strengthening our ability to offer welcome and inclusion for all, regardless of disability status. And more changes are on the horizon: soon we’ll open our new elevator, welcome back Rev. Jason, and call a permanent music director.
Through it all, our river of faith flows on. 2U never stops being 2U. Those of us who have been part of this congregation for a while have witnessed many changes—not only within 2U, but also across Unitarian Universalism and in society at large.
Yet some things in our community’s DNA remain steady. We are people committed to living a faith rooted in freedom, reason, hope, and courage. And we strive—however imperfectly—to let love guide us. Even in a culture that often abuses that word, love remains the heart of who we strive to be.
